The Kumbh Mela is rooted in the Hindu myth of Samudra Manthan, where gods and demons churned the ocean for amrita (nectar of immortality). This symbolizes inner transformation. The amrita, stolen by Jayanta, was placed at four sacred sites: Haridwar, Prayag, Nashik, and Ujjain, where the Kumbh Mela is held. It occurs every 3 years, with major celebrations every 6 and 12 years, and the grand Maha Kumbh Mela every 144 years.
